Analysis of the Yellow Wallpaper and Story of an Hour

The stories of the Yellow Wallpaper and Story of an Hour are both stories that have deep meaning, and many hidden symbols. In both stories there is a woman who in some way is oppressed by some outside force and must find a way to overcome this oppression. While in both stories the main charcter goes through a different ordeal, The main theme behind these events are the same and the two experiences can compare to eachother. the events match in both women we oppressed by men and portrayed as the weaker sex, both the woman find a way to cope with the situation, and both stories have a tragic and ironic ending. The first aspect both stories have in common is the fact that both of the women are oppressed by a man in their life.â€Å"The Yellow†¦show more content†¦Althoguh both women are now in diffcult position, they both find a common ground or a way to deal with their problems. In the case of The Yellow Wallpaper one critism stated Even if Jane does not consciously reco gnize the socially oppressive character reflected by the physical pattern of the wallpaper, her observation that â€Å"I fancy it is the pattern that keeps her so still† indicates her awareness of the futility of any attempt made by the woman in the wallpaper, or herself, to receive any relief, understanding, or satisfaction from this oppressive Order. (Suess pg.86) He comes to realize that the answers she is looking for she will not be able to find being trapped in the room. Just as the woman she now sees trapped in the wallpaper can not be happy in there. In The Story an Hour however, Mrs. Mallard takes a different approach to dealing with her current situation. After the death of her husband as mentioned before she is relievef and states that she is now free. The way she begins to deal with the situation is that she realizes that she can now live her life for her. unlike Jane the answers she was looking for came in the form of her husbands death. In the beginning of the semester, we were given an ethical inventory and I felt fairly confident with my results. I ve never taken an ethics class before, so I was very interested in learning about different philosophies. I came to class with an opened mind and eager with curiosity and was intrigued by the many different philosophical theories. This newfound information influenced my current stance when re-taking the inventory. There were a few questions which I had a change of heart in, most of these questions circled around the philosophy of moral relativism and moral absolutism. At the start of the course, I believed that right and wrong was not determined by one s culture. I believed that every being acknowledges that there are certain overarching morals, i.e., thou shalt not kill. By the end of the course, I changed my opinion on the matter; this change is influenced by the philosopher, Ruth Benedict. Benedict s philosophy of moral relativism states that morality is culturally relative—morality is dependent upon what is socially approved, and that good varies among different societies. Each society has their own expectations of behavior, and that in turn molds the morality of the individual. A lot of times students disrespect the teacher in many ways. Some people might be trying to read during some free time they get while the teacher is busy and by talking, we just make it harder for them to concentrate and we disturb their peace. Finally, by talking in class you are harming your own learning by choosing to waste time instead of actually trying to learn, you are pretty much just harming yourself. Talking during class affects the teacher, the people around you and yourself. Next time you feel the need to talk in class just remember that there are people in that class that are actually trying to learn new things and you will only be interrupting them. Have some respect for the teacher who is only there to help you accomplish your goals in life. In conclusion, you might think talking in class is okay because a lot of people do it but make sure you realize the people you are harming, including yourself.
